Guadalajara has 1.6 million inhabitants and is located in the west of the Mexican highlands, about 500 kilometres west of Mexico City. In the metropolitan region (Zona Metropolitana), to which parts of the districts of Zapopan, Tlaquepaque, Tonalá, Tlajomulco and Ixtlahuacan belong to, 4.1 million people live.

Gualadajara is the second largest city in Mexico and an important commercial centre. The electronics industry employs 60,000 people; that awarded the city already the title of "Silicon Valley of Mexico".
